Welcome to Mount Isa School of the Air, a truly unique learning community that connects students and families across one of the largest geographic service areas in Queensland. Our school supports children who live in remote and rural locations throughout the North West, Northern Territory and across Australia and the world, ensuring that distance is never a barrier to high-quality education.

At Mount Isa School of the Air, we pride ourselves on delivering personalised, high-quality distance education aligned with the Australian Curriculum for students from Prep – Year 10.   Our approach to learning has been shaped by valuable feedback from our staff, families and wider community, allowing us to design a service that meets the unique needs of students learning from home while remaining academically rigorous and engaging. We also have close links with the eKindy students and staff from Brisbane School of Distance Education and Julia Creek State School for our students engaged in learning at the Julia Creek Learning Facility (JCLF).

Our students benefit from small class sizes and highly trained distance education teachers who understand the complexities and opportunities of remote learning. Every child receives targeted support through dedicated Personalised Learning Time (PLT) lessons or Targeted Support Lessons (TSL), ensuring individual learning needs are recognised and supported.

Beyond the virtual classroom, our active Field team plays a vital role in building strong relationships with families and supporting students in their home learning environments. Home visits provide opportunities for meaningful connection, tailored support and collaborative planning between teachers, students and supervisors.

Face-to-face engagement is a valued part of our school experience. Throughout the year, students participate in a range of exciting field opportunities including Activity Days, Group Days, Minischools and Multischools. These events allow students to learn, collaborate and build friendships with peers from across our vast region. We also enrich our programs by engaging specialised artists and external program providers who bring creative, cultural and educational experiences to our students.

Our school community also celebrates a vibrant sporting culture. Each year we proudly host an Athletics Carnival, Swimming Carnival and Cross Country/Colour Run, providing opportunities for participation, teamwork and healthy competition. Students may also progress through representative pathways via the Mount Isa School Sport Association (MISSA) and North West School Sport, offering further opportunities for those who excel in their chosen sports.

The strength of Mount Isa School of the Air lies in its strong partnerships with families and community organisations. We are fortunate to receive ongoing support from our dedicated Parents and Citizens Association (P&C), as well as maintaining strong links with the Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association (ICPA), who advocate for and support families living in remote areas.

At Mount Isa School of the Air, we are proud to provide a supportive, innovative and connected learning environment where every child is known, valued and encouraged to thrive—no matter how far from the classroom they may live.
