Mount Isa School of the Air is a government co-educational prep – year 10 school servicing the needs of isolated students in North West Queensland. Our 200 students (approximate current enrolment) are drawn from a large geographical area which extends from the Gulf of Carpentaria to Birdsville and from Richmond in the East to the Territory in the west.
Our school has two significant underlying values and they are 'Excellence in Education in the Outback' and 'We are a school of families'.
Our field service team provides our students and home tutors with various opportunities to engage in face to face contact and interactions.
Students work with the current Queensland Curriculum aligned to the National Curriculum in the key learning areas to ensure national standards are maintained. Other focus areas within our program are literacy and numeracy skills across all subjects, social and emotional wellbeing and ICT capabilities.
Given that our school community extends across one quarter of Queensland, we have a wonderfully supportive, caring and active school community. There is strong cohesion in relationships between staff, parents, governesses and students which reflects solidly in our school opinion surveys and is the key strength of our school.
The school is staffed by a principal, deputy principal, primary and secondary teachers, teacher-librarian, support teacher – literacy and numeracy, field team, languages-other-than-English teachers, technical officer, parent liaison officer, administration officers, teacher aides, gardener and cleaner. They are responsible for the education of children from prep to year 10, who are unable to access regular schooling. It is the responsibility of the family to make available a suitable person to act as home tutor to guide the child through the program at home and provide appropriate supervision for that child.
