Mount Isa School of the Air is a government co-educational eKindy – Year 10 school servicing the needs of isolated students in North West Queensland and beyond. Our 160 students (approximate current enrolment) are drawn from a large geographical area which extends from the Gulf of Carpentaria to Birdsville and from Hughenden in the East to the Territory in the west.
Our school has two significant underlying values and they are 'Excellence in Education in the Outback' and 'We are a school of families'.
Students work with the Australian National Curriculum in the key learning areas to ensure national standards are maintained. Other focus areas within our program are literacy and numeracy skills across all subjects, social and emotional wellbeing and digital capabilities.
Given that our school community extends across one quarter of Queensland, we have a wonderfully supportive, caring and active school community. There is strong cohesion in relationships between staff, parents, home tutors/governesses and students, which reflects solidly in our school opinion surveys and is a key strength of our school.
Our field service team provides our students and home tutors with various opportunities to engage in face to face contact and interactions throughout the school year in our immediate geographical area in North West Queensland.
The school is staffed by a Principal, Deputy Principal, primary and secondary teachers, Head of Curriculum, Support Teacher – Literacy and Numeracy, Field Team, Technical Officer, Parent Liaison Officer, Business Manager, Instrumental Music Teacher, administration officers, teacher aides, gardener and cleaner. They are responsible for the education of children from eKindy to year 10, who are unable to access regular schooling. It is the responsibility of the family to make available a suitable person to act as home tutor to guide the child through the program in an isolated classroom environment, while providing appropriate supervision for that child to learn successfully while accessing a digital and/or paperbased curriculum.
