Year 4 and Year 5 Magnetic Island Camp

26/06/2018

This year was the first year that both Year 4 and Year 5 joined to attend school camp at Magnetic Island. Early Sunday morning, the students along with Tim Moes, Kelly Murray, Di Knudson, Alex Stewart, Bridoen Schloss and Liz Bailey travelled to Townsville.  After a long day of travelling and sitting on the bus, students were all very excited going across to Magnetic Island on the ferry.  While the students completed some activities together, many activities were completed as a year level group. The Year 4 students had a great time at the beach swimming, building sandcastles and playing games in the sand.  We hiked to the top of Hawkins Point, which had a beautiful view of Magnetic Island and Townsville.  The Year 5 students were lucky to experience many new adventures on camp this year. It was wonderful to witness the obvious mateship that exists amongst the students and to hear their shouts of support for each other as they abseiled down rock faces and kayaked across the Coral Sea.

Wednesday was a highlight for both Year 4 and 5 students as we ventured back to Townsville and went to Billabong Sanctuary.  The students were able to get up close and personal with the wildlife and even got to hold a snake!  The afternoon was spent at the ice skating rink where everyone had a go and made great improvements in the short time that we were there.

One of the reasons we enjoyed this composite camp was that it gave us, as teachers, an opportunity to continue building relationships with past students and get to know students we will be teaching next year.  Students consistently worked well together throughout the week and strong, leadership skills emerged in quite a few individuals.  It was a fantastic week and a great time was had by all – we cannot wait until next year!
